1. Going eastward, you will pass mountains and thousand of lakes and forests, as well as wide rivers and large cities.

 (1) Going eastward 是现在分词做状语，相当于If/When you go eastward.

e.g. Standing beside the window,  you can see our school.

   as well as 用作介词，意为“以及，还有”相当于besides

e.g. I have a few English books as well as this. (除了这本书外，我还有一些英语书。)

注意：

（1）as well as 连接两个并列成分作主语时，句子的谓语动词应与前面的名词和代词的数保持一致。

 Your brother as well as you is very kind to me.

(2) 连接两个动词不定式时，如第一个带to,第二个就不带to.

e.g. We except her to do the homework as well as look after the children.(我们不仅指望她照看孩子而且指望她做家务。)

(3) as well as …not 前后都否定；not … as well as 只否定后面。

e.g. He, as well as his sister, has nor yet joined the Party.

   他和他姐姐一样，都还没有入党。

He has not yet joined the Party as well as his sister.

   他还没有像他姐姐那样已经入党。
